About Us

Want to know more About Dementia Friendly Newtown,  In June 2016, a group of like-minded individuals, working in collaboration with Newtown Town Council and Alzheimer’s Society, held a public meeting which explored the idea of making Newtown a Dementia Friendly Community.

The interest generated was such that a Steering Committee was formed made up of carers, committed individuals, health and social care professionals and a range of other community and voluntary organisations.

After a further meetings, Karen Rodenburg, Dementia Friendly Communities Coordinator, Montgomeryshire & Radnorshire, announced on 19th July that Dementia Friendly Newtown (DFN)  had become the third community in the area to achieve “Working towards” status.

We are a community-led, voluntary, not-for-profit group, established in June 2016.  This website is entirely funded and maintained by volunteers.

Our mission is to create a social movement that mobilizes all sections of the community. We want to challenge the myths and stigma around dementia, increase awareness and understanding, support and promote social inclusion, and most importantly give a voice to people with dementia and their carers so their needs can be fully recognized and the appropriate support offered.
